Golf rate hikes less than feared

Golfers' fears of a 35-per-cent fee increase have been eliminated. However, there are lingering issues to be resolved at the Saanich-owned Cedar Hill Golf Course.
Saanich council voted to adopt a 15 per cent fee increase for pass holders. It's a compromise that means no equipment will be replaced in 2009.
Council also approved an independent study aimed at reinvigorating the course.
"It concerned me greatly to see there was a decrease in the membership," said Coun. Vicki Sanders. "Somebody commented that they all died off, but I’m sure that’s not the case."
A reservation system for the course, a nine-hole system and longer hours at the clubhouse restaurant were among suggestions from golfers. The review will look at all these options for long-term profitability.
But many councillors said it's time to review Saanich's policy against subsidizing the course.
Requiring Cedar Hill to be financially self sufficient is "not consistent with how we treat recreation in this municipality," said Coun. Vic Derman.
"We need to come to grips with this basic policy question," said Coun. Susan Brice. "There are tons of people here tonight that this is a big part of their lives and we owe it to them to figure out (whether to fund golf as a recreational activity)."
Only councillors Vic Derman and Dean Murdock voted against the motion.
"I've had some concern that this is not a public discussion," Murdock said, referring to the fact that the issue wasn't first presented during a financial planning meeting, where public input is welcome.
"I think that's a disservice to our public who obviously have concerns," he added, over the sound of applause from about 30 people attending the meeting.
