Traffic calming in Cordova Bay

Signs of trouble at problematic Saanich intersection

Speed-reducing signs may be the answer for one of Saanich's most troublesome intersections.

For years, Cordova Bay residents have been asking for change along Sayward Road as it bends and connects with Fowler Road.

Speeding cars, low visibility, steep roads and an unexpectedly tight curve all conspire to keep this intersection in the news as the scene of numerous accidents.

In the fall, Saanich staff responded by putting up speed-limit signs, trimming back bushes and installing new lines and reflectors on the road.

"Obviously we want to continue to monitor it," said Coun. Dean Murdock who recently replaced Vicki Sanders on the traffic committee.

So far, there's been no studies to see if the measures have, in fact, slowed traffic.

Neighbour Jennifer Furtado isn't convinced.

"It's a good first step (but) people don't pay attention to signs," she said.

Furtado, along with some of her neighbours, want more intervention, such as a three-way stop or a round about.
