Light rail creates economic growth, candidate says
Victoria – A regional light rail transit system is a perfect candidate for the Premier’s economic stimulus plan, says Saanich Council candidate Dean Murdock.
Murdock wants BC Transit to fast track its rapid transit work plan for provincial consideration. Last week, Premier Gordon Campbell announced that his government will accelerate capital projects to stimulate the economy.
“LRT is a driver of economic growth,” Murdock said, “Construction of the track creates jobs and stimulates development along the rail line.” “It is a clear signal that we’re investing in our region, and investing in smart growth.”
Last month, The Victoria Regional Transit Commission endorsed a BC Transit rapid transit work plan to examine options to service the Westshore and Victoria market and develop recommendations to build ridership, support regional growth plans, and provide foundations for future investment.
“Let’s get the plan in front of the Transportation Minister as a means of creating economic growth,” Murdock said. “We’ve seen rail drive economic development in other jurisdictions, and we have a great opportunity here.”
Since opening its streetcar line in 2001, Portland, Oregon has seen more than $3.5 billion invested in property within two blocks of the line. This includes investments in 10,200 new housing units and 5.4 million square feet of commercial and retail space.
Murdock chairs the Sierra Club Victoria Group and has been an outspoken advocate for public transit for several years.
