Environmental advocate Dean Murdock is running for Saanich council.

Murdock, 27, is chairman of the Sierra Club of Victoria and vice-president of the Quadra-Cedar Hill Community Association.

Murdock says better public transit, affordable housing and environmental protection are his priorities.

He'll release his full platform on the issues in September, but said this week that the high price of gas and environmental concerns mean that the region needs "desirable, affordable and low-emission transportation options."

And while Saanich is a great place to live, it's becoming unaffordable for young families, he said.

Murdock, who is married, grew up in Saanich and has lived there for 15 years.

He's worked with several community and environmental groups, including the Cool Capital Coalition of 26 groups that pressed the Capital Regional District to adopt a regional climate action plan in January. He's also a representative on the region's transportation and environmental advisory committees.

He works for the B.C. Ministry of Health Services as a manager of health sector monitoring.
